Here at my parent's house and they had some trojans and crap on their computer messing it up. Installed malewarebytes anti malware - mbam to remove it. It asked me to do a restart to remove everything. Did the restart and now can't log in from log on screen of xp. Tried going in F8 in safe mode and won't let me in on the admin button either. Any suggestions?? Reinstall of XP not possible until i can atleast save the 1000s of photos of grandkid on there for mom.

Try using this as it should delete whatever is in your computer.

Start by downloading Combofix to your desktop then run program

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

After running combofix download AVG

www.avg.com

They have a free version. The free version does as good of a job with viruses as the paid version. The paid version comes with more bells and whistles.

AVG Free Version:

Again don't install AVG until after you uninstall/remove Norton or other virus protection.

DO NOT use more than one antivirus program. Using multiple Antivirus program does not offer more protection. It'll bring your system to a crawl.
Download, install and run Ccleaner. I doesn't clean or remove spyware. It does a great job cleaning your system of clutter.

AVG paid version does a good job at protecting you from getting infected. But there's no program that'll offer 100% protection. NEVER EVER buy or install any antivrus or antispyware from a pop-up. They are syware. As you experienced they'll make your computer worse and fast.

When you're satisfied your computer is running smoothly without any issues there's two more things I usually do.

First, run Windows Disk Cleanup.

1. Open My Computer
2. Right Click on Local Disk C
3. Click on Properties
4. Click on the Disk Cleanup button (this step can take 5,10 minutes or much longer be patient)
5. In the next Disk Cleanup windows deselect Compress Old Files (with the larger newer hard drives this isn't too important)
6. Click on the More Options tab
7. In the System Restore section click on the Clean up button.
8. In the next window click on Yes

Some Spyware 'store' malicious files in the System Recovery. This process will remove all system recovery points except the last.

At a later period when the computer is running faster do another Disk cleanup including the Compress Old Files

Let me know where it stands. These trojans are just brutal.

If nothing else, you can reinstall XP as a NEW installation rather than over the old one. Get that stuff backed up-any hard drive can die at any given time.

p.s. Good stuff Woody!
